The Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies (IHB), of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research institution for basic research, is offering in the framework of the FWF funded project “Foreign policy thinking in communist Albania and Romania” (Grant-DOI 10.55776/PAT6757023) a 

Postdoc Position (f/m/x) 

(part-time / 20h per week)

to be filled as soon as possible and for a limited period of 3 years. 

The study will first analyse how the ruling elites of Albania and Romania thought about world order, international politics and their own and other actors’ Cold War policies in their internal discussions. Second, it will engage with learning processes in foreign policy, examining how the elites made sense and use of transnationally circulating political ideas and of observations and exchange. Third, it will systematically compare the two cases with each other to find commonalities and differences during the period from Stalin’s death in March 1953 to the Sino-Albanian split in July 1978. 

Your tasks: 

  • Research in archives and libraries in Bucharest (Romania) and in libraries in Vienna 
  • Presentations at international conferences and workshops as well as in research institutes 
  • Publication of research results in renowned journals 
  • Contribution to the conception and organization of scientific events 
  • Science communication activities and public engagement 

Your profile: 

  • Completed doctoral studies in the field of "History" or in a related field 
  • Excellent research achievements in the fields of the history of communist Romania and Cold War history, including publications in renowned peer-reviewed journals 
  • A clear relation of the applicant's academic specialization to the objectives of the research project, especially an interest in transnational, comparative and global history 
  • Excellent knowledge of Romanian and English 
  • Experience in working with documents from Romanian archives 
  • Experience in the organization of academic events and presentations at international conferences 
  • Independence, flexibility and ability to work in a team 

We offer for this position an annual gross salary of € 33.250,70 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
